Course Assignment & Project Timeline – Worth Striving For (8.1)

English 225

Project 4: This is the Remix!

What is a remix? Remix can be defined as a process of blending new ideas with old ideas in order to form a new, innovative, and meaningful product. For this project, you will complete Option A or Option B below:

Option A: Individual Remix Project

You will transform one of your English 225 projects into an alternative form. You might choose to transform your personally-relevant argument project, or your rhetorical analysis project, or your research-based argument project. Furthermore, you might choose to transform this project into a video, a website, a podcast, a service announcement, a song, etc. As you can see from these brief descriptions, the “transformation” possibilities are unlimited, but should be geared toward a specific audience and purpose. Note: I am challenging you to move beyond the basic power point, Prezi, copy/paste, simple project.

An Example of a Previous Remix Project:

  • One student “remixed” her rhetorical analysis essay. (She composed a rhetorical analysis of the article “Colleges Need to Think Bigger To End Campus Rape,” by Jennifer S. Hirsch.) She developed a “Stop Campus Rape” PSA video for colleges and universities.
Option B: Group Remix Project

You will be working in groups of two–in order to transform one mutually agreed upon English 225 project into an alternative form. You might choose to transform one person’s personally-relevant argument project, or one person’s rhetorical analysis project, or one person’s research-based argument project. Furthermore, you might choose to transform this project into a video, a website, a podcast, a service announcement, a song, etc.  As you can see from these brief descriptions, the “transformation” possibilities are unlimited, but should be geared toward a specific audience and purpose. Note: I am challenging your group to move beyond the basic power point, Prezi, copy/paste, simple project.

For Option A and Option B

Begin thinking about how you might mesh a combination of tools together, such as images, music, video, voice, digital media, etc., to remix one project. Consider: How might I bring public attention to an issue I noted in an earlier essay? That is, how might I transform an earlier essay into a new, innovative, and meaningful product that is geared toward public change? What purpose can this new, innovative, and meaningful product serve and for what audience?

Project Requirements:

  • Videos, podcasts, songs, etc., should be 3-5 minutes in length
  • Websites should be “very resourceful”–not too long, but not too short

Project Four “Final Version + Reflection” Evaluation:

Each person (Option A) or group (Option B) should ensure that:

  • the remix project has a clear purpose and audience
  • the remix project moves or is situated in a logical manner
  • the color, image, music, etc., used in the remix project are appropriate to the purpose and audience (as discussed in the readings).

Each Remix Project will be evaluated via these criteria. Note: There is also a required 2 page reflection component

Total Points: 75

Project Four Presentation Evaluation

Each individual (Option A) or group (Option B) presentation will be graded via the following:

  • Organization: Was the presentation well-organized (i.e., was there an introduction, clear presentation of the remix project, and conclusion)?
  • Participation (Option B Only): Did both group members equally participate in the presentation?
  • Comprehension: Did the individual (Option A) or group (Option B) speak in a normal-paced, audible tone? Was eye-contact made with the audience?
  • Time: The presentation time allocated for each person (Option A) or group (Option B) will be 3-5 minutes. Was this time requirement met?

I highly recommend that each person (Option A) or group (Option B) make “presentation plans”–that is make plans for how you (Option A) or the group (Option B) will effectively structure the presentation. Then, rehearse those plans to ensure that you or your group meet(s) the 3-5 minute time requirement. Many online websites and videos (YouTube) provide resourceful presentation strategy tips. Explore those strategies and use them.
